Diamond Origin (1)

"Where do you get your diamonds from?"
“I hope to find diamonds produced in South Africa/Belgium/somewhere!”
These are common questions. Here we need to first clarify two different concepts, mineral origin and cutting origin. We will briefly introduce them in two articles. But keep in mind that no matter the mining or cutting place, it will not affect the price . Therefore, the diamond’s origin will not be indicated on the diamond appraisal certificate. The most important thing that affects the price is the quality of the diamond itself, so it is important to understand its production background. It was out of interest in diamonds and to broaden my knowledge.

In this article we will first share a little knowledge about the origin of diamond mines.

In terms of gem grade, southern Africa has the largest output. In terms of annual gem grade production value, the order is Southern Africa > Russia > Canada > Australia .

southern africa

There are three main diamond producing countries, namely Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. Although South Africa has the highest reputation, its output and value of gem-quality diamonds are far less than those of the other two countries. The world's largest diamond mine is located in Namibia, with high quality and over 90% gem grade.

The production value ranking of the three countries is Botswana > Namibia > South Africa

In most cases, jewelry merchants will not know the origin of each individual diamond , and the diamond's origin will not be indicated on the diamond appraisal report (except for the certificate of origin). There is nothing outstanding about South African diamonds. However, many shops in the market will advertise that they sell "South African diamonds". They only deliberately advertise the most famous origin out of commercial considerations or ignorance .

Russia

Primary diamond deposits were first discovered in Siberia-Yakut in 1954. So far, 450 deposits have been discovered, mainly distributed in central Siberia, with an estimated diamond content of 250 million ct.

Canada

Canada has a large reserve of gem-quality diamonds. Although its mining business can be traced back to the 1960s, the first diamond mine, Ekati, was not officially operational until 1998. The main reason is that most of the mines are located in the polar regions. Mining diamonds is extremely challenging and costly. Very high, and it was not until diamond prices rose sharply in modern times that active development began. In 2013, Dominion Diamond Corp. bought the entire project. In the first half of 2018, the Ekati diamond mine has produced 63 million carats (12.6 tons) of diamonds.

Australia

Australia has the largest diamond output, but most of it is used for industrial purposes, so it is not very well-known. The most famous of them are pink diamonds. About 90% of the world's red and pink diamonds come from the Argyle Mine in Western Australia. Unfortunately, this mine has officially closed in November 2020.
